2017 Cybersecurity Checklist

2017 Cybersecurity Checklist

The new year is upon us, and stepping up your cybersecurity should be one of your resolutions for 2017. Threats are increasing and hackers are becoming more sophisticated every day, and this trend is sure to continue in the new year. It’s more important than ever to stay one step ahead of these threats by boosting your cybersecurity. Use this checklist to help start the new year off fresh and secure!

Clean up

The first step in staying secure is to get rid of any unnecessary data on your computer, laptop, and smartphone. In the course of a year, a lot of data builds up, and most you no longer need. Delete duplicate and junk files, as well as any programs or applications you no longer use. Not only will doing so keep cyber criminals from accessing your data, but it will also free up space on your hard drive, making your device run faster.

Boost your defenses

If you don’t have any antivirus or spyware software and network protection, now is the time to get it. These defenses are extremely important for protecting against cyber criminals and malware. If you already have antivirus and antispyware software installed, be sure it is updated to the latest version. Most software systems offer automatic updates, so you can have the latest protection without even thinking about it.

Strengthen passwords

One of the most important aspects of proper cybersecurity is having strong passwords. A strong password should be 8-10 characters with a mix of numbers, letters, and capitalization. Additionally, don’t use the same password for multiple accounts or devices. That way if one password is compromised, your other accounts and devices will be safe.

Check on your hardware

Most of the time, software is only as effective as the device it runs on. Maintaining your computer hardware, while not strictly a security issue, is important. Check under the hood every once in a while to make sure that your device is running properly. There are utility tools available that alert you to minor hardware problems.

Set up a plan of attack for incidents and hacks

Despite the best-laid defense plans, hacks, and other cybersecurity incidents do occur. In the event of an incident, you should have a plan of action. You can install backup-and-restore tools to recover lost data. Different kinds of infiltrations may require different reaction methods. If an incident occurs, call Liberty and we can instruct you on the proper steps to take.

Start the new year off right by stepping up your cybersecurity game. By following these tips, you can make 2017 a safe and secure digital year!
